Lake Garda in spring: tips for a weekend getaway

A bright and sunny sky, twittering birds and a multitude of flowers colouring the unparalleled views of Lake Garda: spring has sprung! The perfect season to enjoy a relaxing weekend and leave the daily grind behind. for a while.

There are many places to visit and activities to choose from, so it’s important to decide in advance what you want to do most. In this article, Rent Garda Lake will be sharing tips on how to spend a weekend away from home on Lake Garda in spring.

Take a boat trip

To admire Lake Garda from a different perspective, we suggest the boat trip that leaves from Riva del Garda. The first stop is Limone del Garda, a small bougainvillea-hued town with ancient lemon houses, from which it takes its name. The second stop is the characteristic Malcesine, where we recommend visiting the 14th-century Scaligero castle to take a step back in time. Heading to the peak of the mountain, you can enjoy a truly unique and impressive panoramic view of the lake.

Visit Sirmione

Sirmione is one of the most famous and visited places on Lake Garda. From the very first steps through its picturesque streets, you will be captivated by its incredible charm: the mediaeval buildings, the tulips in spring, the breath-taking scenery, the typical Italian fashion shops.

Start your visit with a stop at the Scaligero Castle, in the heart of Sirmione: it is one of the best-preserved Italian castles, despite being built in the 12th century. After a tasty lunch in one of the splendid lakeside restaurants, continue with a visit to the Grotte di Catullo, an ancient and precious Roman villa full of frescoes from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Finally, indulge yourself with a relaxing wellness spa night at the Terme di Acquaria spa. Its sulphurous thermal water flowing from the depths of the underwater spring will help improve your respiratory system and skin.

Looking for a sportier weekend?

Walk along the Ponale road

If you want to enjoy a day of sport, surrounded by nature, we recommend a spectacular route to be covered on foot or by mountain bike. We are talking about the “Sentiero Del Ponale” track. Starting from Riva del Garda, you will walk along the lake passing in front of the historic hydroelectric power station. After less than a kilometre you will cross the Gardesana road, leaving the asphalt behind you. You will then find yourself on the beautiful Ponale gravel path, surrounded by high rocks, and proceed in the direction of Valle di Ledro. After about two kilometres, the path for pedestrians and cyclists splits, but it remains one of the most beautiful and popular routes in Europe with breath-taking views of Lake Garda.

Practice water sports

Lake Garda is well known for the variety of water sports practised on its waters, such as kitesurfing, wakeboarding, canoeing and stand-up paddling, more commonly called SUP. In late spring, the sun is high in the sky, and thanks to a practical wetsuit, you can enjoy some fun hours in the water. On the banks of the lake, you will find many sports centres offering lessons in each of these disciplines to experience unparalleled emotions.

Discover the path from Busatte to Tempesta

The Busatte – Tempesta path is one of the best known and most popular routes in the Upper Garda area. The walk winds along a ridge overlooking the lake, surrounded by thick greenery, typical of the area. To overcome the steepest points of the path, solid dark green iron steps have been built, a feature that has made this path so popular on social media. You won’t be able to resist stopping to take a selfie on the steps, with a splendid panorama of the lake behind you.

At the end of the trail, you can reach the state road to return to your starting point by taking advantage of the regular bus service or, if you prefer to end the day in touch with nature, you can return on foot by walking along a forest road that re-joins the trail.
